dc.description.abstract | Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is potentially an alternative to the commonly applied chlorine-based disinfectants in Reverse Osmosis (RO) membrane system to control biofouling. To evaluate the feasibility of applying H2O2 in RO membrane systems, its interaction with polyamide (PA) layer and other components of systems, and how these interactions would affect the chemical fate of H2O2 and membrane performance were systematically evaluated in this study. The maximum tolerated dose (Dmax) of a polyamide thin-film membrane to H2O2 exposure is determined at > 744,000 ppm-h. However, the membrane tolerance can be significantly lower (7.686 ppm-h) when iron is presented in the membrane system. H2O2 can corrode the iron components in the membrane system and result in the accumulation of iron species on membrane surface. These iron species can react with H2O2 via Fenton-liked reactions and generate hydroxyl radical (·OH), which vigorously deteriorates PA layer and decomposes other organics in feed water. This Fenton-liked reaction can also be accelerated and inhibited by common corrosion premotor and inhibitor ion chloride and phosphate, respectively. | |
