dc.description.abstract | Chen Xianzhang (style name Baisha, 1428-1500), is usually considered by modern scholars as an early representative of “School of Mind” of Neo-Confucianism who did not serve the government and led a reclusive life. Little attention is paid to his political theory as well as his engagements in governance in local communities. This thesis aims to formulate Chen’s administrative principles and to disclose what he had done to transform his hometown into a more civilized community. It shows that Chen had never forgotten his aspiration of governing the country and that self-cultivation and state governance —the two prongs of his philosophy, are coherently related to each other. | |
