dc.description.abstractThe effective minority carrier lifetime of a solar cell is an important parameter, which characterises device performance to achieve high efficiency solar cell. Modulated photoluminescence is a versatile measurement technique that can be used to determine the effective minority carrier lifetime, by means of sinusoidally modulated illumination. The main advantage of this method is that the measurement can be performed on both finished solar cells as well as partially processed samples, which is not possible with the conventional methods. In order to make use of this unique advantage, we have successfully developed the hardware and software of a lifetime measurement tool based on the modulated photoluminescence technique. We have applied this to carrier lifetime measurements on bifacial solar cell samples at different processing stages, before and after metallisation. The results are consistent and matches well with the conventional measurement methods.
