dc.description.abstract | This dissertation maps and theorises the probable intersections between performance theory and astronomy, extraterrestrial exploration, astrophysics and similar fields of scientific inquiry and practice. The methodology considers the definition of “performance” broadly and includes definitions in relation to technology, science, culture and artistic expression. The core of the argument is a critique of the discursive practice and notion of “outer space”. In order to articulate this critique, the argument submits two central notions: planetary relationality and planetary performance. Planetary relationality is defined as the dynamic between the notions of the terrestrial and the extraterrestrial, according to which both are defined in relation to each other, thereby contributing to a definition of the planet itself. A planetary performance is the establishment or enactment of the relation between the terrestrial and the extraterrestrial according to a determinate set of onto-epistemic predicates and historical contingencies. | |
