Abstract: The liberalisation of telecommunications markets, i.e. the transformation of monopolistic telecommunications markets into competitive ones, requires implementation of substantial sectoral reforms and relevant regulatory intervention. Without regulatory intervention, competition in the telecommunication markets is not likely to be established. The telecommunications regulation thus plays a decisive role in the liberalisation of telecommunications markets. This thesis provides an insight into telecommunications sector liberalisation process and telecommunications regulation across the selected Asian countries: India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. Chapters 1 a?? 4 are dedicated to the liberalisation process in the individual selected countries, including a historical background of telecommunications, the origins and recent developments in the relevant liberalisation process and an overview of the current telecommunications regulation.Chapter 5 provides the rationale for individual aspects of regulatory intervention and a comparison of telecommunications sector reforms and regulation adopted in the selected countries against a??best practicesa?? formulated in the World Banka??s Telecommunications Handbook.
