Abstract: Aim: To examine the effect of a diabetes self-efficacy enhancing programme (DSEEP) on self-efficacy, self-care activities, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), HbA1c and unplanned healthcare service usage on older adults with type 2 diabetes. Methods: A total of 142 participants were randomly allocated to the intervention group (DSEEP plus usual care) or control group (usual care). The 8-week DSEEP comprised a newly developed guidebook on diabetes self-care, a one-day workshop, and fortnightly telephone calls. Data were collected at baseline and 8 weeks post-intervention. Results: Compared to the control group, the intervention group had a significantly higher increase in self-efficacy (F=4.99, p=.03) and diabetes self-care activities (F=18.11, p=<.001), and lower HbA1c (F=6.08, p=.015). Unplanned healthcare service usage and HRQoL were not significant between groups. Conclusions: DSEEP increased self-efficacy , self-care activities and reduced HbA1c. It could be a new option for effective care delivery for older adults with type 2 diabetes.
