Abstract: This dissertation hopes to explore the problematic cultural landscape of the New Period in making (1977-1983) through the marginalized artistic form of animated film. After the Two Hundred policies were re-launched in 1978, many artistic forms and aesthetic practices that were expelled and stigmatized during the Cultural Revolution were resurfaced in area of arts and literature as part of cultural reconstructing process. The animation industry was considered “back to former\right track” and approaching its “second historical peak”. In particular, the long-forbidden religious theme\elements reappeared in the animated films in the forms of various genres of fantasies. These fantasies intertwined with themes that concerned by the nation and the public of the time. The return of religious theme\elements was a seeming signal of lifting of cultural taboos. Nevertheless the taboos were still existed but in a subtler way through artistic modification and literary rewrite. These taboos were used to serve the updated ideological, cultural and aesthetic agendas at the beginning of the New Period.
