dc.description.abstract | This thesis investigated the variation in microclimate, litterfall, and decomposition across primary and secondary forests in Singapore. Microclimate in the forest understorey became warmer and drier along the gradient from primary forest to waste woodlands. Warmer and drier microclimates were associated with higher canopy openness and smaller forest fragments. The elevated nutrient content of leaf litter in waste woodlands resulted in accelerated litter decomposition, which reduced the pool of leaf litter and soil organic matter accumulated. Furthermore, I demonstrated that the increased decomposition in young secondary forests can be explained by changes in termite community composition. For the decomposition of wood litter, I showed that the individual contributions of termites and fungal decomposers were non-additive – fungal colonisation on the wood substrate was necessary to facilitate subsequent termite consumption. Overall, this thesis revealed that species composition and site-specific conditions were major contributors in shaping ecosystem function. | |
