dc.description.abstract | This thesis provides an agentic view of the rural in the midst of urbanization. Extant rural (geographical) studies, underpinned either by an idyllic or by a modernist vision, tend to articulate a passive understanding of rurality in the context of the increasingly blurred rural-urban boundary. Drawing on over-ten-months ethnographic fieldwork of the (re)production of lineage landscapes in rural Wenzhou, I unpack how the rural ‘works’ at the dimensions of discourse, locality, practice and trans-locality. I argue that the rural has certain agency in forming and shaping urbanizing relations and processes, and at the same time, in appropriating, hybridizing and negotiating with them to achieve its own ends. The findings of this study not only challenge the extant understanding of rurality as a left-over category by de-centering the western dominant image of idyllic rurality but also provide a more active, multi-faceted and hybridized understanding of rurality in rapidly urbanizing China. | |
