Abstract: Diet is an important modifiable risk factor for non-communicable diseases. However, assessing diet is challenging in multi-ethnic cosmopolitan settings. Furthermore, dietary quality indices have been developed for Western populations, but little is known about their impact on chronic disease in Asian populations. We used a data-driven approach to develop a new comprehensive food frequency questionnaire for Singaporeans. In addition, we investigated the associations between dietary quality indices such as the Alternative Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010) and risk of myocardial infraction and mortality among Singapore Chinese Health Study cohort participants. Higher adherence to AHEI-2010 was associated with lower risk of fatal and nonfatal myocardial infarction. Furthermore, all dietary quality indices that emphasize a variety of healthy plant-based foods were associated with a substantially lower risk of cardiovascular, respiratory disease, and all-cause mortality in an Asian population.
