This thesis attempts to deepen current understanding of people’s reactions to institutionalized ‘place-making’ practices in relation to their lived realities through a linguistic analysis of both housing-related media (ads) and narrative (interviews) data. My study offers new insights for linguistic landscape (LL) studies by deepening and extending current theoretical discussions of LL through the use of ethnography to provide a ‘globalization from below’ (Mathews & Vega 2012) perspective, and including online spaces and ads as forms of pre-materialized LL. By considering spatialization processes in media and narratives, ideologies underlying reasons for the localized or delocalized identity of spaces can be uncovered. Additionally, by extending Bucholtz and Hall’s (2005) theoretical work on identity to include that of space, it aids in demonstrating people’s identity-work in connecting themselves with traditional and modern social practices/values while mitigating pressures of rapidly-growing globalization.
