dc.description.abstract | It is known that direct modulated long-wavelength vertical-cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL)-based optical access link suffers from limited power budget, which is due to the chirp-induced signal distortion and poor chromatic dispersion tolerance. In this thesis, we investigate different methods on improving the dispersion-tolerance of 1.5-μm VCSEL-based optical access link. Firstly, 10-Gb/s frequency shift keying (FSK) modulation of VCSELs is realized and different DC-balanced line codings are applied. Then, we present a systematic study on the transmission performance of a 10.7-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) and 4-pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) signals generated by a directly intensity modulated 1.5-μm VCSEL. The extinction ratio (ER) of the signals are optimized, and electrical equalization technique is applied. Finally, we demonstrate 25-Gb/s signals transmission in 1.5-μm 10-G class VCSEL-based optical access link with simple modulation formats (e.g. OOK and 4-PAM) and direct detection. | |
