Abstract: Twelve infants with exomphalos and two with gastroschisis and no other congenital anomalies incompatible with life were treated. Conservative management using gentian violet was successful with no complications in 4 infants, was successful in spite of leakage in 1 infant ('opsite' spray used to seal the leak), and resulted in rupture in 3 infants one of whom survived the operation. Surgical treatment was used mainly for small exomphalos, ruptured exomphalos and gastroschisis. Nine infants survived, a survival rate of 64.3%.
