dc.description.abstract | Roller compaction is a dry granulation process where powder is densified between two counter-rotating rollers. This study investigated the effects of material properties and processing variables on roller compaction and its product quality. As the mechanical strength of flakes was an important variable and no suitable measurement method existed, a reliable method was developed. The effects of various processing parameters and raw materials on flake formation and granules produced were studied. Roller speed exerted a greater influence than screw speed on roller compaction. Compaction force had only limited influence while dwell time did not affect flake properties. The extent of influence on compaction by the processing parameters was dependent on powder flowability. The particle size and size distribution of raw materials showed differing effects, depending on its nature. Molecular weight and chemical composition of the binder added affected product quality. | |
