This thesis reports the synthesis and characterization of nanostructured materials by using template method and surface functionalization of metal nanoparticles. Template method is becoming increasingly common for synthesizing nanostructures. For example, anodized aluminium oxide (AAO) can serve as physical template for the deposition of many materials. Likewise, metal nanoparticles can serve as chemical templates that help to synthesize nanostructures. Firstly, Ag nanoparticles and AAO are employed as templates to synthesize core-shell, hollow and tubular nanostructures. Surface functionalization of metal nanoparticles is critical issue for high-added value applications involving metal nanoparticles by controlling the surface chemical composition and its modification. Secondly, Cr(CO)4dpp attached silver nanoparticles, which are potential heterogeneous catalysts, have been prepared and subsequently characterized by various techniques. Lastly, Au-S-(CH2)6-OH nanoparticles have been prepared and the OH terminal group of the MCH ligand has been directly functionalized through small molecule organic reactions in high yields.
