This dissertation is a study of Character Appraisal of the Wei-Jin Intellectuals through the manifestation of Habits of Mind in Shi Shuo Xin Yu. Shi Shuo Xin Yu is a collection of anecdotes, short conversations, and pithy observations on personalities who lived in China between late Han and Wei-Jin. In the chaotic era of Wei-Jin, the Intellectuals were under challenging conditions that demanded strategic reasoning, insightfulness, perseverance, creativity, and craftsmanship to resolve the problems, dilemmas, paradoxes, and enigmas they faced. The Habits of Mind are recent contemporary categorised characteristics of what intelligent people do when they are confronted with problems. This current study applying the modern Habits of Mind on the Wei-Jin Intellectuals in the book has produced significant new insights on the formation of the distinguishing features of Wei-Jin Character Appraisal. The writer would also like to offer an exploration in the psychological aspects of the Wei-Jin intellectuals in Shi Shuo Xin Yu.
