The thesis focuses on science fiction and scientific essays, which were mainly published in journals from 1949 to 1966 (seventeen-year period), and the journals which serve as crucial para-text. By perusing the materials that lengthily escaped the academic radar, my aim lies in revealing the multi-layered interactions between socialist or communist ideology and science, especially the deviancy of scientific expression in the landscape of socialist or communist culture. The marginality of science narration proffers the potential to dissect socialist/communist culture in more detailed ways. Science fiction and scientific writings of the “seventeen-year period” performed, as well as defined, “science” among the mass culture. Therefore, the exploration of its discursive strategy, iterative themes, and narrative vicissitude would shed new light on our understanding of socialist/communist culture and modernity.
