Abstract

This thesis focuses on youth films and Singapore's young film community, which emerged in the early 1990s. “Youth” is used as a discursive practice to parallel the development of the nascent film industry since late twentieth century with significant youth films, which serve as historical and political allegories. By revealing various interactions between the film community, institutions and cultural policies, the aim of this thesis is to examine the relationship between the construction of Singapore contemporary cinema and development of young Singapore modern city-nation.
