This thesis discusses the roles of Singapore Teochew merchants in “Shantou-Hong Kong-Siam-Singapore” trade network from three aspects: the extension of trade areas and products, the cooperation of remittance and trade, and the protection by the business organisations ( merchant guilds). Singapore Teochew merchants have played all three roles of developer, capital operator as well as trade regulator and this has in turn made Singapore a rather solid link in “Shantou-Hong Kong-Siam-Singapore” trade network. One can see that a trading network is often developed on the back of an immigration network and in itself is also a complicated multi-layer structure which consists of products network, capital network and organisation network.
