Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a global burden and psychological distress (PD) is prevalent in patients with T2DM. PD in patients with T2DM can be categorised into major depressive disorder (MDD) or diabetes-related distress (DRD). First, the Kessler-10 (K10), which measures MDD, and Problem Areas in Diabetes (PAID), which measures DRD, were individually evaluated for their psychometric properties. Both instruments were valid and reliable. Next, the K10 and PAID were compared to determine if MDD or DRD, was more relevant to patients with T2DM. PAID was more sensitive and was associated with glycaemic control. Third, factors associated with DRD in cross-sectional studies and over time were assessed. Increased sleepiness, depression and reduced quality of life were associated with DRD, but only baseline quality of life and changes in sleepiness were associated with DRD over time. Lastly, patients with persistent DRD versus those with low DRD were qualitatively compared to understand the perceived differences between the two groups of patients.
