Abstract: The rate of relaxation between equivalent (111) off-centre sites for Co2+ impurities in SrO is determined as a function of temperature between about 1.7 and 15 K by measuring the response of the optical absorption to changes in externally applied DC or AC electric fields. The temperature dependence of the relaxation lifetime below 7 K indicates the presence of a one-phonon-assisted tunnelling mechanism. Comparisons between the DC and AC field relaxation times at temperatures above about 9 K show that the reorientations occur predominantly through 109 degrees rather than 71 degrees or 180 degrees transitions. © 1987 IOP Publishing Ltd.
