dc.description.abstract | Separation of nitrogen from natural gas, whose principal combustible component is methane with small amount of higher hydrocarbons, is a problem of major commercial importance, as the presence of nitrogen reduces the heating value of fuel. A Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) based separation process, in which purified methane is obtained as the high pressure raffinate product from high pressure feed, is likely to enjoy favorable power cost advantage over the competing separation technologies. A detailed PSA simulation model was developed based on axially dispersed plug flow in the fluid phase, multisite Langmuir isotherm to represent binary equilibrium and bidispersed pore diffusion to represent adsorption kinetics. The model was used to carry out a comparative evaluation of the performances of carbon molecular sieve (CMS), strontium exchanged ETS-4 (Sr-ETS-4) and barium exchanged ETS-4 (Ba-ETS-4) adsorbents for methane-nitrogen separation from a feed mixture that is representative of nitrogen contaminated natural gas reserves. | |
