This thesis explores the everyday lives of Malay single-mothers in Singapore. Based on ethnographic interviews with 25 Malay single-mothers, the women's everyday experiences plainly dispel the dominant, ethno-racialised stereotypes of single-mothers being 'transferors of dysfunctionality' to their children. Moreover, their difficulties in fulfilling the dual roles of breadwinning and caregiving for their families aptly illuminate the need for adequate formal social assistance to help them towards self-sufficiency.
