dc.description.abstractThis project aims to develop multifunctional PEO surface-decorated silica nanocapsules, whereby the capabilities of stimuli-responsiveness, bioimaging (both fluorescent and MRI) and specific targeting are effectively combined together in a single nanocapsule. To develop the multifunctional nanocapsules, a novel interfacial condensation strategy will be employed with F127 block copolymers as the interfacial templates. Formation of the silica nanoshell will be confined to the interface between the core and corona of the F127 micelle while pre-prepared MnO nanocrystals and fluorescent agents will be uploaded by the simultaneous encapsulation of these hydrophobic compounds within the micelle core. To improve the targeting efficiency, our strategy is to conjugate the nanocapsule surface with specifically designed ligands that can be recognizable by the specific cells present at the disease site. Upon successful establishment of the multifunctional nanocapsules, they will be subsequently investigated for their nanostructure, biological behavior and imaging performance.
