dc.description.abstract | ALZHEIMER?S DISEASE (AD) IS A PREVALENT AND PROGRESSIVE NEURODEGENERATIVE DISORDER IN ELDERLY PEOPLE. EPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS (T2DM) PATIENTS HAVE AN INCREASED RISK OF DEVELOPING AD. GIVEN THAT T2DM OCCURS DECADES BEFORE THE ONSET OF AD, IT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND WHICH TOXIC EVENTS IN T2DM CONTRIBUTE TO AD PATHOGENESIS. HUMAN AMYLIN, AN AMYLOIDOGENIC PEPTIDE PRESENTS IN BRAIN AND INDUCES OXIDATIVE STRESS, HAS EMERGED AS A TARGET TO EXPLAIN THE LINK BETWEEN TYPE 2 DIABETES AND ALZHEIMER?S DISEASE. FURTHERMORE, OXIDATIVE STRESS HAS BEEN FOUND TO FACILITATE AMYLOIDOGENIC PROCESSING OF APP, RESULTING IN A? ACCUMULATION. THUS, THIS STUDY AIMS TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTS OF HUMAN AMYLIN AND H2O2-INDUCED OXIDATIVE STRESS ON A? GENERATION AND APP PROCESSING. | |
