dc.description.abstract | In the Thursday Next novels, Jasper Fforde dramatises the process of the reader?s experience of a fictional world as a sequence of suspensions and re-immersions: he suspends the reader from his fictional world through ruptures in the text, but subsequently re-immerses the reader through the repairs of these ruptures. Fforde suggests that the reader desires the illusion of a whole fictional world in spite of the fragmented experiences that may constitute a fictional world by aiding the reader?s attempt to synthesise these disjointed fragments into a cohesive whole. The experience of a fictional world is mediated through an experience of space, and Fforde enacts the sequence of suspension and re-immersion on three spaces: the textual space, the generic space, and the virtual space. The repetition of this sequence in these varied spaces not only confirms but also intensifies the reader?s desire for a unified fictional world. | |
