The overall aim of this thesis is to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the self-assembly process of silk fibroin hydrogel induced by ultrasonication. Subsequently, the knowledge acquired was used to develop novel functional silk-based materials such as silk fibroin hydrogels with tuneable properties (i.e. stiffness and gelation time) and magnetic silk materials.
