Abstract: THIS THESIS ARGUES FOR THE VALENCY OF DIASPORAS AS AN ALTERNATIVE CRITICAL FRAMEWORK SPECIFICALLY IN RELATION TO THE TRANSNATIONAL AS A WAY OF APPROACHING CHINESE CINEMA. THE IDEAS OF HOME, HOMELAND, THE NATION STATE, RACE, LANGUAGE AND DESCENT AS THEY ARE USED IN STATE DISCOURSE AND EVERYDAY LIFE UNDER DIASPORIC CONDITIONS WILL BE STUDIED AS WELL.
