Abstract: THE MING DYNASTY WAS ESTABLISHED IN WAR BUT LIKE MANY OTHER CHINESE DYNASTIES, THE DYNASTY WAS EVENTUALLY TRANSFORMED INTO CIVIL GOVERNMENT. HOWEVER, THE EARLY MING EMPERORS CONTINUED TO MAINTAIN A MARTIAL ETHOS THAT WAS ACTIVELY PROMOTED BY THE SCHOLAR-OFFICIALS, ESPECIALLY THE HANLIN SCHOLARS. MILITARY TRADITIONS SUCH AS THE IMPERIAL HUNTS, MILITARY REVIEWS AND ARCHERY CONTESTS WERE ROUTINELY HELD IN THE PRESENCE OF THE EMPERORS AND THE RULERS? ROLE AS MILITARY COMMANDERS WAS LAUDED AND SUPPORTED BY LITERATI THROUGH THEIR WRITINGS. HOWEVER, BEGINNING FROM THE MID-MING PERIOD, THE LITERATI?S PERSPECTIVES ON SUCH MARTIAL ETHOS WERE NEVER CONSISTENT AND UNIFORM AS THEY OFTEN FIND THEIR OWN AGENDAS IN CONFLICT WITH IMPERIAL ASPIRATIONS. MARTIAL ACTIVITIES SUCH AS THE IMPERIAL HUNT, THE GRAND REVIEW AND EVEN MILITARY CAMPAIGNS LED PERSONALLY BY THE EMPEROR BECAME PLATFORMS WHERE THE SCHOLAR-OFFICIALS CONTEST AND NEGOTIATE WITH EACH OTHER AND WITH THE EMPEROR.
