This paper focuses on the design issues for brushless dc motors used in hard disk drives. Particular design problems arising due to high operating speed are addressed. Effective methods for predicting electromagnetic forces and their effects on the bearing stability are discussed. Core loss and its dependence on some of the leading design parameters are presented in the paper. © 1998 IEEE.
