dc.description.abstract | In cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) the Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model deals with the interaction between a two-level atom and a single quantized mode of a cavity under the rotating-wave approximation in which the counter-rotating terms (CRTs) with large oscillating frequencies are neglected. In this work we investigate the cavity QED with a single rapidly vibrating two-level atom (ion) in a cavity and find novel interesting results due to atom vibration: (1) the single mode approximation is no longer applicable, (2) the usual CRTs in the JC model cannot be neglected any more if the atom vibration frequency is comparable to or larger than the cavity resonance frequency and the atomic transition frequency; in some specific situations they even play a major role, for example, (3) atom vibration can give rise to the excitation of the atom from its ground state and photon creation from the vacuum. Our model can be realized experimentally in the microwave domain of cavity QED with an ion strongly confined in a Paul trap. © 2014 Astro Ltd. | |
