dc.description.abstractThe end-to-end performance of interconnected local area networks (LAN) is studied. The system uses bridges to connect distributed LANs through a high-speed communication link. The interconnected system is modelled as a single-chain and multiple-chain closed queueing system. Based on the MVA (mean value analysis) method, an iterative algorithm is proposed to calculate the end-to-end performance (intra-LAN and inter-LAN throughput and average message delays). The impacts of various system parameters such as window size, bridge processing time and the communication link capacity on the end-to-end performance, are investigated. Finally, the analytical results are verified by computer simulations. © 1991.
