dc.description.abstract | Aquatic rhizosphere is the primary site of uptake of pollutants found in contaminated surface waters. To investigate the dynamic dose-time effect of pollutants on the aquatic rhizosphere, RhizoFlowCell, a multifunctional bioreactor, was developed. It not only provides non-destructive extraction of rhizosphere exudation but also offers online microscopic imaging of microbial growth on biotic and abiotic surfaces in the rhizosphere environment. A methodology was developed to handle time-resolved, multi-factor, hierarchical, and multivariate data that resulted from mass spectrometry analyzed rhizosphere exudation. RhizoFlowCell was used to investigate the dynamic metabolic response of Pandanus amaryllifolius, which was subjected to short-term and long-term exposure of naphthalene in standard surface water. Multivariate statistical analyses were performed on the metabolomic data to quantify the differential response. This study provides basis for a proof of principle to quantify the dynamic metabolomic response of aquatic rhizosphere experiencing pollutant stress. | |
