The genus Nandus comprises three species. Nandus nandus is known throughout India and Burma, N. nebulosus from Peninsular Malaysia and Sundaland, and N. oxyrhynchus, new species, from the Mekong. Nandus oxyrhynchus is distinguished from other members of the genus by its deep head, sharp snout, relatively large serrations on the preopercle, details of colour pattern, and a lateral line scale count intermediate between N. nandus and N. nebulosus.
