Abstract
Holographic data storage systems (HDSS), first introduced in 1963, are attractive candidates for applications requiring very high storage densities and data rates due to the volumetric page-oriented storage approach used. In this thesis, nonlinear equalization and detection and accurate channel modeling for HDSS are investigated. For the first time, nonlinear equalization and detection schemes for HDSS are proposed. We present a novel and simple-to-implement nonlinear minimum mean square error equalization scheme with linear and nonlinear targets. Partial response equalization followed by 2D Viterbi detection scheme is also studied. Simulation results show a signal to noise ratio gain of about 6 dB at a bit error rate of 10-6 with nonlinear equalization and an extra 2 dB gain is obtained with the partial response approach. In the second part of the thesis, we develop an accurate channel model for HDSS.
