UNDERGROUND PEDESTRIAN NETWORK & ITS IMPACTS ON THE IMAGE-ABILITY OF A PLACE

Abstract
This research paper investigates the development of underground pedestrian networks (UPNs) in Singapore that allows the public to walk through seamless sheltered pedestrian links integrated with the public transport network regardless of the weather. These UPNs connected directly to the underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) allows the public to commute to their offices or shopping spaces without the need to travel on the ground level. Critics have argued that subterranean spaces with indescribable form, no exterior facades or windows lack visibility and image-ability. Adopting Lynch’s cognitive mapping method, this research paper attempts to investigate the impacts of UPNs on the image-ability of a city. Juxtaposing the analytical mappings made on the UPNs and the ground street in Orchard Road, this research paper argues that the displacement of commuters from the city’s streets to these UPNs could diminish the image-ability of a place due to the lack of variation in spatial volumes and activity types in the subterranean level. Through the analyses of cognitive mapping exercises, investigation of the spatial characteristics and human behavior patterns on the street and underground level of Orchard Road, this paper attempts to reason that new form(s) of urban elements is identified in forming this complex spatiality and image-ability of the UPN.
