Abstract
To fill the gap in the literature, the present study investigated the effects of grit on academic goal pursuit, through differential complaining behaviours. Study 1 revealed that gritty people have lower complaint frequency than less gritty people. Contrary to predictions, gritty and less gritty people did not differ in their preference for the responses they receive from others. Study 2 demonstrated that gritty people respond to complaints with more resolution and less sympathy, and have friends with similar levels of grit. However, the interpersonal pathway through similarity was not supported. Instead, gritty people perceived less similarity with the “participant” who complained to seek sympathy. Mediation analysis revealed that this led to lower social attraction and willingness to pair up with the participant, and subsequently less likely to work with the “participant”. This provides a novel pathway demonstrating that gritty people have gritty friends through lower similarity and interaction with less gritty people. As such, gritty people interact with one another and provide resolution to remove the obstacles faced in academic goal pursuit, in turn leading to more successful goal attainment.
