Abstract
Housing the elderly to have them remain independent has always been an issue that the government has been tackling with. The Housing and Development Board have tried several schemes in the past but they have not turned out to be successful. The features of those schemes had design flaws that were not suited for the elderly. Also, in the words of Minister of National Development, the time was not right yet then to launch such a flat. Today, Singapore is facing a graying population, hence the suitability of the studio apartment scheme. In order to live independently, the elderly need certain services to be catered to. This is especially so today as more Singaporeans are facing physical and mental illnesses. Without a balanced array of services, the elderly will not be able to live a full life. It is only in providing a complete living environment specially suited for the elderly can they live out their lives in comfort and peace.
