Abstract
The syntactico-semantic conditions governing tone sandhi application at the phrase level in the Northern Min dialect of Fuzhou are examined. Only modifiers that precede the head, & an argument that follows the head, can form a tone group with it. An argument should occupy the final, dominant position in a tone group & trigger tone sanhi in the head, but not vice versa. The theoretical implications of this hypothesis on recent theories of syntax-phonology interaction are discussed, concluding that grammatical relations such as head, argument, & modifier must be given a place in such theories.
