Miscibility of bromobenzylated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) with poly(p-methylstyrene)

Abstract
Bromobenzylated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (BrPPO) samples with degrees of bromination of 9, 16 and 37% were found to be miscible with poly(p-methylstyrene) (PpMS), but BrPPO samples with degrees of bromination of 50, 62 and 69% were immiscible with PpMS. As compared with polystyrene (PS), PpMS has a lower tolerance to bromination of PPO. The Gordon-Taylor k parameter of a miscible BrPPO/PpMS blend decreases with increasing degree of bromination of BrPPO, but its value is smaller than that of a corresponding BrPPO/PS blend. The interaction parameter Xblend of a BrPPO/PS blend is more negative than a BrPPO/PpMS blend, indicating that methyl substitution of PS reduces its miscibility with BrPPO. © 1989.
