Long-term structural changes in the Central Nucleus of the Amygdala (CNA) in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Abstract
At 9 months after diabetes induction, both electron-lucent and electron-dense forms of degeneration were present in axons, axon terminals and dendrites. Degenerating axon terminals are characterized by dense lamellar bodies, vacuoles and seemingly normal, small agranular vesicles in their cytoplasm. Degenerating dendrites are characterized by an electron-lucent cytoplasm containing vacuoles and dense lamellar bodies. The electron-lucent dendrites often form the central element of a synaptic glomerulus with seemingly normal axon terminals containing small agranular vesicles. At 12 months after diabetes induction, degenerating axons, axon terminals and dendrites were widely scattered in the neuropil of the CNA. Besides electron-lucent degenerating axon terminals and dendrites, several macrophages containing residua in their cytoplasm were also present. Some of the degenerating profiles were beyond recognition. It is concluded that diabetes mellitus has a progressive degenerative effect on the CNA.
