Abstract
This study aims to conceptualize and contextualize Aw Boon Haw and his entrepreneurship, while most of the previous studies tend to portray him either as a patriotic overseas Chinese, or a shrewd medicine man who planned his projects only for the purpose of profit. I investigate Aw and his multiple undertakings from a perspective of new cultural history by using interdisciplinary approaches, such as cultural history, social history, print culture and popular culture. This study surpasses other previous studies of same topic by exploring Aw's political, economical, social environments, cultural attempts, as well as the interpersonal networking with other agents. I argue that Aw was a cultural entrepreneur, who had transformed the cultural landscape of Nanyang and China during the earlier half of twentieth century and had been playing a crucial role in shaping the modern culture of these two main regions, through two dimensions: nationalism and consumerism.
