Abstract
This thesis examines the plays of the ten women winners in the eighty-three years of the Pulitzer prize-giving tradition and investigates the feminist concerns and perspectives that underscore the significant evolution of American womena??s roles and behaviour in the 20th Century. The assessment of the critical and scholarly perspectives on these ten plays reveals feminist polemics and consciousness that are pertinent to and representative of the contemporary American woman. These ten plays record the progressive gains and growing freedom enjoyed by women amidst their conflicts with prevailing social mores and reflect a growing feminist consciousness towards womena??s concerns. The women protagonists are presented as feminist subjects and not mere objects observed through the masculine lens. The Pulitzer Prize honours the wide appeal and artistic merit of these ten plays as they draw attention to womena??s issues through sensitively-crafted drama.
