The Social Significance of Marriage and Parenthood in Singapore

Abstract
In a follow-up to a study of family policy in Singapore undertaken in 1981, which covered the period 1960-1980, examined here is the period 1981-1989. Discussion focuses on: (1) a historical overview of relevant sociological studies of the Singapore family; (2) marriage & parenthood as personal goals, based on data from population surveys; (3) marriage & parenthood as social goals, based on analysis of existing legislation & trends in family policy; & (4) comparison of marriage & parenthood as personal & social goals, from the perspectives of the concepts of institutional intervention & social discipline.
