bamboo construction in the region and intends to find about possible solution to the
existing problems which are a hindrance to bamboo being the primary material of
construction in the region.
Bamboo is available in plenty in the north eastern province of India, but inspite of all its
advantages it is very little used in the main construction industry. The hypothesis was
formulated by an understanding of the scenario of bamboo based construction in the
region, the current trend of the market and a study of existing projects of the area. Further
readings, case studies , discussion and interview with local architects, including a short field
trip, led to a detailed conclusion as to possible measures needed to establish the hypothesis
and eliminate the hindrances in the way.
The dissertation critically understands the situation prevalent in the region in terms of all
aspects relating to bamboo based construction from industrialization, customization, joinery
to the social mindset of the people, in its limited scope and formulate the idea that with
proper architectural intervention a new beginning to the bamboo industry in the region is
possible.
