Abstract
There is increasing awareness and emerging trends in the practice of sustainable material usage in form of reuse as an architectural design strategy. Although the acquiescence of the notion of reuse in architecture has been well discussed across various stakeholders in understanding the impediments and impetus of material reuse in architecture, the reality of practical implementation from the ground operators have not yet been appraised. Through close examination of two local small-medium sized practices whose philosophy embraces notions of reuse, this research paper draws insights on their strategic approach in form of design thinking and technical constructs as a design process in overcoming constraints and challenges with regards to material reuse in Singapore. By doing so, this dissertation paper will serve as a constructive guide in understanding the theoretical framework behind material reuse in as well as the procurement, management and design approach from the practices’ point of view. It aims to provide a reference point for budding practices dealing with material reuse in Singapore whilst critically evaluating the course of implemented ideas in the local context. This dissertation will eventually culminate into a compendium of design strategies in dealing with material reuse, technical constructs as part of a design process as well as implications on the practice’s modus operandi. Lastly, it will provide an insight on how we can go beyond the limits and constraints together with implications and theoretical methodologies in the potential application locally across different architectural project scales.
