Abstract
Large deformation characteristics of the human red blood cells were discussed. Video images of deformation were used to extract the dimensional changes induced as a function of stretching force. A three-dimensional computational simulation of the biconcave cell subjected to stretching by optical tweezers was performed. Several different constitutive models of the cell membrane were also evaluated.
