Abstract
Singapore, in the midst of developing more green buildings to meet the increasing global environmental pressure, has recently put great emphasis on the development of vigorous Building Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark scheme.
The rising material consumption trend coupled with competitive international demand for the essential building materials, it is imperative that BCA Green Mark must attach suitable level of importance to the issue of sustainable material usage.
The aim of this report is to critically evaluate the component of material conservation in BCA Green Mark Version 3, and find ways to improve the material category in the BCA Green Mark scheme.
There are 2 objectives of this study namely to examine the coverage and the point structure of BCA Green Mark criteria relating to material category through an international comparative studies; and
review the BCA Green Mark scheme (Version 3) in order to assess its adequacy pertaining to sustainable material usage.
The use of recyclable and reused materials will enhance the resilience of the industry. This report also looks into the factors that influence the behavior of Singapore’s construction professionals towards the use of environmentally friendly, recycled and reused building materials as well as their attitudes
towards the use of such materials.
