Abstract
The influence of low-level wind shear and midlevel moisture on tropical and extratropical convection self organization is described. The nonhydrostatic numerical model COAMPS is used to conduct numerical experiments of squall lines. The cloud microphysics in model is based on the Kessler warm rain parameterization. The vertical profiles of temperature, wind and dew point temperature which represent buoyancy, wind shear and moisture conditions of environment are required as input into COAMPS model. The results show that lower cloud base is disadvantageous to cold pool, which is unfavorable for convection growth.
