Abstract
This thesis examines the teen pics, especially the ones produced by Shaw Brothers, during the cold war era from 1950s to 1970s.The aim of this thesis is to find out how the cold war had influenced the teen movies. In the study of the teen movies, together with Hong Kong political and cultural environment during the cold war era, I particularly look into the figural formation of middlebrows’presented in the teen movies. This thesis firstly takes a closer look at Lin Feng, an actress from Shaw Brothers, to find out the movie star mechanism of Shaw Brothers.The next chapter pays attention to the youth images presented in the teen movies produced by Shaw Brothers,Cathy and Hong Kong leftist film. The last chapter looks into the two movies: Spring Song (1959) and The Joy of Spring (1966) to explore how a variety of imaginations of Hong Kong modernity were represented in these teen movies and in what ways the American notion of middlebrows was involved in the process.
